The german-speaking swiss write standard german, that's true - there is no swiss german official language (but still some literature, e-mails etc. using the dialect). the swiss can also speak standard german very well, but to them it's a foreign language that they have to learn how to use when they start school.. Just spend time with some people speaking swiss german, for a lot of them it’s not a problem repeating a sentence in standard german, because it shows that you really want to learn it. the speaking bit is a different thing..
For example, geneva is french-speaking; interlaken is german-speaking as it is in the berner-oberland (bern is switzerland’s capital and has both bern (german) and basel (french) in its daily lingo, but i believe more german.. Taking a trip to paris, wengen switzerland, and munich this july. i speak french but not german. i realize people will say that most swiss and germans speak english, but i would like to try and. Swiss german refers to the many various dialects spoken in switzerland, and is not to be confused with standard swiss german (the written version of one of switzerland’s four official languages)..
